Leesburg Beats Jones, 49-0: In Softball? April 27, 1990

Leesburg Beats Jones, 49-0: In Softball?

SOFTBALL

Leesburg Coach Georgette Wilson was unaware that any state records were within her team's reach. All she knew was it got real ugly somewhere around the second inning of her team's 49-0, five-inning victory over Jones Thursday afternoon in the Class AAA, District 6 tournament.
Leesburg (12-5) missed tying the record for most runs scored in a game by one. The record was set on March 3, 1988, when Montverde Academy defeated Calvary Christian of Ormond Beach, 50-2. Although the Florida Sports Record Book doesn't keep track of the largest margin of victory, Leesburg now could probably lay claim to at least tying that unofficial record.

How bad was it?
Leesburg sent 20 batters to the plate in the second inning, scored 16 runs, and that wasn't even the Yellow Jackets' best inning. In the third inning, Leesburg had 24 batters step to the plate and scored 18 runs. The Yellow Jackets batted around in every inning except the bottom of the fourth when they scored only six runs, their lowest one-inning output of the game.

Leadoff batter Becky Morris did just what a leadoff batter is supposed to do. She got on base every time she batted - all seven times. She was 4-for-6, reaching twice on errors and once on a walk.

Leesburg had two home runs, both by Missy Thompson - one of which was a grand slam in the second inning - and had two more base-emptying hits when balls hit by Mecee Roberts and Kelly Crum were turned into four-base errors.

Jones committed 19 errors.

The victory puts Leesburg in today's championship game at 4:30 p.m. against Edgewater, which defeated Seminole, 11-7, in Thursday's other game.

Argonauts take two games from the top-ranked team in the Gulf South Conference

Pensacola, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team swept Alabama-Huntsville at home on Saturday in the team’s first home game in nearly four weeks. The Argonauts held on for a 6-5 game-one win before shutting out the Chargers 5-0 in game two.

“Alabama-Huntsville is a very good team and they have been winning several games lately so it was really good for us to get the wins,” head coach Tami Cyr said. “These wins will hopefully boost our team’s confidence and help them believe that they can beat anybody. It’s just two great wins for a very deserving team. We've never let up and never stopped practicing hard and it’s just a tribute to this teams’ work ethic.”

Redshirt freshman Lauren Register (Vernon, Fla./Vernon HS) got the start in game one and earned the win after pitching 4.2 innings in the circle and striking out three batters. Senior Jordan Ratliff (Petersburg, Mich./Owens CC) appeared in relief and allowed only one hit in 2.1 innings and held the Chargers offense scoreless en route to earning her first save of the season.

West Florida kicked things off in the bottom of the first inning as Hannah Camp (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park HS) hit an RBI single through the left side to score Danielle Sanders (Leesburg, Fla./St. Petersburg College). Sanders led off the inning with a stand-up triple off the fence in deep center field off the first pitch she saw.

UWF extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning as Kasie Buckley (Little Rock, Miss./East Central CC) hit a RBI double to center field to score Caroline Kaston (Niceville, Fla./Wallace CC). Hannah Dowling (Irvine, Calif./Santa Ana College) would go on to hit a RBI single through the right side to score Buckley to increase the lead to three runs.

In the bottom of the fourth inning UWF used a two-out rally to score three runs off of four hits. Kaston started things off with a RBI single to left field. West Florida junior first baseman Elizabeth Nugent (Ruskin, Fla./East Bay HS) would add to the rally with a 2-RBI single to extend the Argo lead to six runs.

The Alabama-Huntsville Chargers used four hits to score five runs in the top of the fifth inning to end Registers day in the circle. Ratliff pitched 2.1 innings in relief to seal the win for West Florida.

UWF junior pitcher Taylor Bailey (Austin, Texas/University of Louisiana Monroe) earned her ninth win of the season in the 5-0, game-two win. Bailey pitched a complete game and scattered two hits and struck out six batters to improve her season ERA to 1.84.

“I felt really good out there today,” Bailey said. “Those were two really big wins for us and it was a team effort all the way around.”

West Florida tacked on a run in the first inning for the second-straight game as Nugent hit a RBI double to left field to score Kaston.

UWF added two runs in the bottom of the third inning off of two hits. With runners on the corners and one out Audrey Harner (Celina, Ohio/Cypress College) scored from third as the Alabama-Huntsville catcher tried to throw out Kaston as she attempted to steal second base. The Argo’s added another run as H. Camp doubled to left field to score Buckley and increase the lead to three runs.

The Argos scored a run in the bottom of the fifth as Sanders scored on a UAH throwing error after stealing third base. West Florida added an insurance run in the following inning as Sanders hit a RBI double down the right field line to score Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS).

West Florida will play host to West Alabama on Sunday, April 14 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. CT. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
